Referral Link

A tracking link assigned to one affiliate so referrals can be credited correctly.

What is a referral link?

A referral link, also referred to as an affiliate link, is a unique tracking link that an affiliate uses to promote a business, product, or service.

In affiliate marketing, each affiliate is usually given their own unique referral link. This link helps the affiliate program identify who sent a visitor, lead, or customer to the business. When someone clicks the link and later makes a purchase, signs up, or completes another tracked action, the affiliate can receive credit for that referral.

How referral links work

A referral link often looks like a regular website URL, but it includes tracking information. This tracking information may be an affiliate ID, referral code, username, or unique URL parameter.

For example:

  • Regular website link: yourstore.com
  • Referral link: yourstore.com/?ref=sarah10

In this example, sarah10 identifies the affiliate. If someone clicks Sarah’s unique referral link, the affiliate tracking system can connect that visitor back to Sarah.

Once the visitor lands on the website, the system may use cookies, tracking scripts, coupon codes, or customer records to remember the referral. If the visitor converts within the program’s tracking window, Sarah may earn a commission.

Referral links are one of the most important parts of an affiliate program because they make tracking possible. Without a unique referral link, it would be much harder to know which affiliate sent which customer.
