Multi Domain Tracking

Tracking affiliate referrals across multiple domains or subdomains in the same customer journey.

What is Multi Domain Tracking?

Multi-domain tracking is the ability to track affiliate referrals, customer activity, and conversions across more than one website domain.

In affiliate marketing, this matters when a customer’s journey does not happen on a single website. For example, a business might have its main website on one domain, a checkout page on another domain, and a customer portal or product site on a third domain. Without multi-domain tracking, the affiliate tracking system may lose the connection between the original affiliate click and the final purchase.

How multi-domain tracking works

Multi-domain tracking helps keep referral data connected as a visitor moves between related websites.

For example:

  • A customer clicks an affiliate link to brand.com
  • They browse products or information on brand.com
  • They are sent to checkout.brandstore.com or a separate checkout platform
  • They complete a purchase there
  • The affiliate program still credits the correct affiliate

To make this work, tracking information usually needs to be passed between domains. This may happen through cookies, URL parameters, scripts, server-side tracking, customer records, or integrations with ecommerce and payment platforms.

For businesses, multi-domain tracking is especially important if their sales process uses multiple tools. Many companies use one platform for their marketing site, another for checkout, another for subscriptions, and another for customer accounts. If these systems are not connected properly, affiliate commissions may not be tracked accurately.

It helps prevent lost referrals. If an affiliate sends a potential customer to your site, but the actual purchase happens on a different domain, the affiliate still expects to receive credit. If tracking breaks during that handoff, it can create underreported conversions, missed commissions, and frustration for affiliates.

For example, multi-domain tracking is especially useful for ecommerce stores with external checkout pages, SaaS companies with separate marketing and app domains, businesses using landing page builders, brands with multiple regional websites, and companies that operate several related product sites.
