Click-Through

When a visitor clicks an ad, link, or email and moves to another page.

What Is a Click-Through?

A click-through happens when someone clicks an affiliate's tracked link and is directed to the brand's website, landing page, product page, or another destination.

In affiliate marketing, click-throughs are an important part of the referral journey because they help connect traffic back to the affiliate who promoted the business.

Affiliates typically receive a unique referral link that identifies them when they promote a brand.

For example, an affiliate might share their link in a:

  • Blog post
  • Social media post
  • Email or newsletter
  • YouTube video description
  • Website or online community

When someone clicks that link, the affiliate tracking software records the click-through and can use the tracking information to associate the visitor with the referring affiliate.

If that visitor later makes a qualifying purchase or completes another conversion, the affiliate may receive credit and earn a commission based on the program's attribution and commission rules.

What Is Click-Through Rate (CTR)?

Click-through rate (CTR) measures the percentage of impressions that result in clicks.

The basic formula is:

CTR = (Clicks ÷ Impressions) × 100

If an affiliate promotion receives 1,000 impressions and 50 clicks, its click-through rate is 5%.

CTR can help you evaluate how effectively a particular banner, link, offer, or piece of affiliate content encourages people to take the next step.

However, a high CTR doesn't necessarily mean a campaign is profitable. Affiliate managers should also look at conversions, sales, revenue, and other downstream performance metrics.

Click-Through vs. Impression

An impression occurs when an affiliate promotion is displayed, while a click-through occurs when someone actually clicks it.

For example, an affiliate banner might receive:

  • 5,000 impressions
  • 250 click-throughs
  • 20 sales

Looking at these metrics together helps affiliate managers understand how effectively affiliate promotions move potential customers from seeing an offer to visiting the brand's website and ultimately converting.
